A major winter storm looks to take aim on the high plains Wednesday night through Saturday morning. A winter storm watch is in effect for areas north and west of Farnam, NE. That includes the cites of North Platte and Ogallala, from 7am Thursday and 7am Friday.
Tuesday night, look for mostly cloudy skies with lows in the lower 30s, winds will be out of the southeast around 10.
Wednesday is when things start to become interesting across the region. First off a wind advisory is in effect for areas north and west of Paxton. Winds by Wednesday afternoon may gust up to 50mph. Rain moves into the area during the afternoon and may mix with snow west of Big Springs. Highs will be in the mid to upper 40s.
Wednesday look for rain to change over to all snow west of Big Springs, 2-4 inches of snow is possible by Thursday AM. For the rest of the area rain will start to mix with snow. Lows will be in the lower 30s and it will still be windy. East/southeast winds 20-30 mph.
Thursday is when I think things really start to go down hill across the region. Rain and snow will mix over to all snow Thursday afternoon with temperatures steady to slowly falling through the 30s. Winds I think take a break Thursday afternoon, and then pick back up by Thursday night when blizzard conditions will start to play in. Blizzard conditions may last into Friday, by late Friday afternoon 6 inches or more of snow is possible. Light snow will linger into Saturday morning then clear out Saturday afternoon. Then it’s dry, sunny and mild starting Sunday.
This has the potential to become a major weather event for the region; travel may become severely impacted across Colorado, Nebraska and South Dakota. If you have live stock or young animals please plan to move them to shelter by Thursday.
Please stay tuned as there will be changes to the forecast, a slight jog in the storm’s track may change the forecast.
Join me tonight at 10pm for News 2 tonight.
