Saturday will be nice... (hey at least half your weekend is good). Mostly Sunny skies Saturday morning will becoming Partly Sunny in the afternoon. Highs will be in the upper 40s to the lower 50s. If you have any travel plans or any outdoor stuff to do, I would do it Saturday as things go down hill in a hurry on Saturday night.
Now on to the fun!
Snow will move in from the northwest and spread southeast Saturday Night into Sunday AM along with the cold air. Our high on Sunday should be reached during the AM and its going to be a free fall all day into the teens and by the afternoon the single digits. Winds will also be cooking as well, at times gusting up to 45mph creating blizzard conditions and dangerous wind chill values of 10 to 30 below by Sunday afternoon. Travel may become dangerous in rural/open areas outside of North Platte. If you have to travel on Sunday please make sure you have a winter survival kit in your car. That would include a snow shovel, dry food (such as crackers) and bottle water. Stay with you vehicle until help arrives. But I will say this (not to scare anyone) HWY 20 from about Cody/Kilgore west to the Nebraska/Wyoming state line. If you get stuck, help my not be able to come to you until the storm has passed.
Snowfall
Here’s what I have with snowfall on Sunday (All subject to change-check back in this weekend) … North of Hwy 2 and west of Hwy 83, I am looking for about 4-8 inches of snow. South of Hwy 2, North of I-80 and east of Hwy 83 I am looking for about 1-4” of snow and South of I-80 Only about an 1inch at best. For the city of North Platte, id say plan on at least 1-2 inches. As you can see this storm is not going to produce tons and tons of snow. But with the possible 45mph or higher wind gusts. That will create blizzard conditions. 1-3 foot snow drifts ( especially north of Hwy 2) at times and severe life threatening wind chill readings.
What You Can Do
I would just plan on staying put on Sunday, as snow, wind and dangerous wind chills will be going on. If you live in a rural area and you make a visit to North Plate on Sunday for shopping and church, do it Saturday. Ranchers and farmers should have livestock or animals in warm shelter by Saturday evening at the latest.
Meteorologist Tara Moore and I will be here through out the weekend monitoring the weather. Come on back to knopnews2.com for updates, you can always find News 2 trueview radar on here. And the latest warnings and advisories at the bottom right hand part of the weather page.
Take care,
Thomas
