A light mix is in our forecast Wednesday night; some area roads could have some icy patches on it. So please be careful overnight on Wednesday and Thursday morning if you will be traveling.

Sunshine returns, Thursday afternoon with highs in the 50s. Friday and Saturday are even better with sunshine, highs in the 60s and 70s.

Break out the shorts?

Tuesday, February 26, 2008

Mostly clear skies overnight Tuesday, with lows in the teens in the Platte River Valley, 20s elsewhere. Sunshine returns on Wednesday, highs in the lower 50s.

The warm up continues on Thursday and Friday, both days with sunshine, and highs in the upper 50s and close to 60.

Saturday is the golden day, with highs in the upper 60s and lower 70s with sunshine.

Sunday it’s back to winter, with highs in the 30s with a chance of rain and snow.
Sunny skies Tuesday afternoon, highs will be in the low to mid 40s with winds out of the north northwest 10-15.

Monday, February 25, 2008

Calmer winds overnight Monday, lows will range from 16 to 21 degrees.

Windy

Strong winds will continue Monday afternoon. A Wind Advisory remains in effect for most of the KNOP view area until Monday evening. In addition, scattered snow showers may reduce visibilities at times. Winds will diminish after sunset Monday evening.

The Lee Bird Field temperature site has been down for about a day now, I contacted the National Weather Service and they are working on it. The problem is an FAA problem getting the temperature information online and out to the public. Please be patient as they try fix the problem.

See you tonight on KNOP News 2!

A Mainly Clear Night

Mostly clear skies Thursday night, but no bitter cold temperatures as we will have a light south wind. Lows will be in the teens.

Friday looks great! With sunny skies and temperatures in the mid to upper 40s, will have the same for Saturday and even warmer on Sunday, in fact Sunday could approach 60, before we return to winter early next week.

Ca Ca Cold

Another frigid overnight on tap for Greater Nebraska, lows will be around zero to 5 below for North Platte and areas east, single digits to around 10 above for areas west of North Platte, with a few clouds from time to time.

Lunar Eclipse Wednesday Night

With mostly clear to partly cloudy skies expected over our area Wednesday night, we are in for a treat. Wednesday night starting at 7:43 central time will be the being of a lunar eclipse. The total lunar eclipse will happen at 9:01 central time, and then a partial eclipse around 9:51 central time.

If you are going to be outside Wednesday night viewing the eclipse, it will be cold so buddle up! Temps tonight will be in the single digits, with below zero wind chills.

A Short Warm Up

Temps on Tuesday will be in the upper 40s and lower 50s, don’t get use to the warmth, as temperatures will take a tumble on Tuesday night. We also have a chance of light snow or freezing drizzle.

High temperatures struggle through the single digits and the teens on Wednesday.

A mild Saturday

A major storm system misses us to the south on Saturday. Will be left with sunny and mild conditions. Highs will hit 50 on Saturday across most of Greater Nebraska, but with a few clouds to our south, places like Curtis and Imperial will remain in the upper 40s.

We get scraped by the southern storm system on Saturday night and Sunday. That’s brings us a chance of light snow Saturday night and Sunday. But a northerly storm system will move towards us. That opens the door for colder temperatures on Saturday night and Sunday, along with windy conditions. In fact the National Weather Service thinks we may have a wind advisory on Sunday.

Monday, temperatures say in the 30s for highs after a bitter cold start. We warm up into the 50s next Tuesday, but there has been a big change in our forecast next week beginning Wednesday.

Originally, I was forecasting highs in the 50s with sunshine, but HPC, the Euro and GFS models bring in colder air beginning on Wednesday, there is also a slight chance of precipitation starting on Wednesday. There will probably be some changes in this forecast as we head towards the middle of next week, so stay tuned to KNOP-TV News 2 and knopnews2.com for the latest weather updates. And remember, you can now see News 2 Trueview Radar on KNOPNEWS2.com always.

Back to the deep-freeze

Cuddle close to your valentine, temps will go near zero tonight with wind chill possibly approaching –15. Stay warm tonight!

Wednesday, February 13, 2008

Let the roller coaster ride begin!

No, folks, I am not going to Six Flags in Dallas, but our weather will treat us like were at a Six Flags Park.

Temperatures on Wednesday were in the mid to upper 50s, but I still managed to somehow pick up a cold. Go figure! Speaking of cold, that’s what our weather is going be like being on Thursday with snow and blowing snow. Cuddle close with your valentine to compensate!

I am not expecting much in the way of snowfall accumulation with about an inch here in North Platte, 1 to 3 in the western part of the KNOP viewing area, and less than an inch towards Broken Bow and Lexington.

The biggest change you’ll hate after a 55 degree and sunny February day is the biting cold air. Temps on Thursday will struggle to get to 20 degrees, and will be near zero Friday morning.

The cold air doesn’t last long, though, as we’re back in the upper 30s on Friday, and near 50 on Saturday. Then it’s another chance of snow on Sunday with colder temperatures.

Enjoy the ride.

Some Snow

Snow is on the way just in time for Valentines Day. I will have a better handle on snow accumulations on Wednesday, but as of right now 1-3 inches is possible.

Wednesday looks nice with highs in upper 40s and lower 50s and sunshine.

Some Snow

Valentines day snow is on the way, and it looks like we could pick up a few inches. Before that it looks like a great Wednesday, with highs in lower 50s with sunshine.

Freeze Thaw Cycle

As we work our way through February and March, we enter the season I call the “Freeze-Thaw Cycle.” Meaning we will have a couple days in the 50s and will have a couple days in the deep freeze, like we experienced this past Sunday. The “Freeze-Thaw Cycle” posed a problem in my home state of Michigan with the area lakes. We would have a few warm days and a few cold days, which would melt the ice to dangerous levels. Sometimes tragically people would fall through the ice and die.

This week is a prefect example of the “Freeze-Thaw Cycle.” Tuesday and Wednesday will be mild with temps in the 40s and low 50s. But Thursday, winter comes roaring back with a nice chance of snow, and temps tumbling back into the 20s. Thursday’s snow may accumulate, so please keep posted on the latest forecasts for the later part of this week.

The Cold Snap Is Delayed

Looks like were going to sneak out one more mild day across the area this weekend. High’s on Saturday will be in the 40s, expect in northern Nebraska were temps will be in the upper 20s. The cold air comes through the entire area on Saturday night. We also bring the chance of some very light snow and some freezing fog. Lows will range from near zero around Valentine, to about 10 here in North Platte. Sunday is sunny, but cold with highs in the teens to the north, 20s North Platte, 30s Imperial.

First part of next week looks mild, partly sunny on Monday with highs in the 40s. Tuesday we have a little system moving in that could bring us a slight chance of a rain and snow mix. Highs still will be around 40 and near 50 on Wednesday before we cool down next week.

Thursday, February 7, 2008

Hold on to your hats!

We have some more snowflakes on the way in Greater Nebraska. No one will have to pull out there snow shovels, though. A clipper system will graze the state Thursday night bringing some scattered snow shower action. Lows tonight with the clouds and flakes will be in the upper teens.

Behind the system, sunshine and a nice strong westerly flow kicks in Friday. We’ll see sunshine with highs in the lower 40s statewide. Winds will be on the breezy side, though, gusting out of the west at 15-25 mph, and at times gusting up to 35 to 40 mph.

Snow showers return very early Saturday morning, along with colder temperatures. Saturday we will have a wide range of temperatures across the state. In fact, there possibly could be a 30 degree swing in temperatures from Imperial to Valentine. Imperial could hit 40 with Valentine struggling to reach 10. The cold snap is short lived as temperatures start to warm back up a little on Sunday and then a nice improvement back into the 40s on Monday. Another shot of precipitation comes back into the forecast on Tuesday with cooler temperatures.

Snowy Super Tuesday

And now cold!

Snow amounts ranged from around 1 inch in North Platte, to about 3-6 inches east and south. There was near 10 inches by the Kansas boarder, and less than one inch in the Sand hills and the Panhandle.

Now the big story on Tuesday night will be the bitter cold temperatures. Lows Tuesday night will be in the zero to five below range, highs tomorrow will be in the upper 20s and lower 30s.

A few weak storm systems impact our area on Thursday AM and Saturday. In fact, the one Saturday will drive in colder temperatures for the weekend. Sorry, folks, but the warm up I advertised yesterday for the weekend is now gone.

Monday, February 4, 2008

Be Careful Monday Night.

Monday evening look for light snow and patchy freezing drizzle across the area. Look for precipitation to change to snow during the overnight hours on Monday. By Tuesday afternoon, look for about 1-2 inches in the city of North Platte, and more as you head south, and less to the north.

Cold air plunges into Greater Nebraska Tuesday night too. Lows will be in the single digits with below zero wind chills possible.
Our next shot of snow comes in late Wednesday into early Thursday, but this should be a minor event. Then we warm up as we head towards the weekend with highs by Sunday nearing 50.
