Weekend Forecast

A powerful storm system will be moving into Colorado on Saturday and then into the Central US starting Sunday Night. This has been a very tricky forecast. One thing is becoming clear. Eastern Colorado looks to be getting up to 6-12" of snow this weekend. So please use caution if traveling towards Denver this weekend. Starting late Saturday and into Sunday, light snow starts to spread into Nebraska. Snowfall amounts for Nebraska still up in the air as this storm system is expected to be cut off from the jet stream starting late Sunday. A further North and Northwest track with this storm system would mean more snow, further south would mean less. Continue to stay up to date with the latest weather forecast changes through out the weekend.

Friday Forecast

I wish I could re-use Thursday's forecast, but sorry I can 't. Will have light rain/light snow across the area. Maybe a spotty inch for NW NEB. but thats about it. Highs will struggle to get to the upper 30s and lower 40s. Winds will be out of the north 10 to 20mph.

Still question marks for the end of the weekend storm system. Still stay tuned.

Wednesday Forecast (10/28)

Looking to be a wet day in the North Platte area on Wednesday. Highs will be in the mid 40s with winds out of the East 10 to 20mph... T-Storms are possible east of North Platte on Wednesday afternoon, some of these storms may become severe... Highs will be around 55-60 for the Broken Bow and Lexington Areas. Colder HWY 61 and west... And this is where we land on the snow topic...

Snow will spread into the Panhandle (West of Big Springs) on Wednesday Morning and Wednesday Afternoon. By Wednesday Afternoon im looking at a 9 alarm snowstorm taking place from Big Springs west. Travel maybe severely impacted by Wednesday Afternoon. Please be prepared for I-80 and I-76 to be possibly closed starting Early Wednesday afternoon.

Wednesday Night I am looking for the snow to start to spread into the Ogallala, Tryon, Mullen Areas and westward. And by Thursday AM im looking for the snow to start moving into the North Platte area.

As for snowfall totals by Friday AM, I am looking for 1 to 2 feet of snow in the Panhandle and Eastern Colorado, this includes the Big Springs, Lewellen, Chappel and Oshkosh areas. 6 to 12 inches of snow for Ogallala, Arthur, Tryon, Mullen, Hyannis and Western Cherry County. And about 2-5 inches for the North Platte area. This is all subject to change, depending on change over times, and more importanly, the track of the low! For example, a 30 to 40 mile eastward track would put North Platte in possibly double digit snowfall.

Stay tuned to News 2 on this winter storm...

Interesting Weather Wednesday

Please check the right hand side of the weather page for the latest weather bulletions...

Its going to be a wet Wednesday morning with some areas of fog. Wednesday afternoon is when we start sliding towards winter. Temps will drop back into the 30s and rain will start mixing with snow. Tons and tons of questions remains with this system and how much snow we could possibly get. The big weather key Wednesday afternoon will be when we start mixing and changing over to snow. A quicker change over will means more snow, slower will mean less.

As for storms, I think the dry line around 3pm is going to be lying around Hay Springs to Big Springs. East of there that is you're best chance of t-storms. At this time I don't believe the atmosphere is good enough for severe weather. But heavy rain like Tuesday is possible on Wednesday Afternoon and evening.

If you get a storm on Thursday, count yourself lucky as the bigger story I think will be the hotter temperatures as temps soar into the mid to upper 90s.

Friday through the weekend is starting to look wet and a touch cooler as a slow moving storm system will affect the central and northern plains. Temperatures will also slide back into the 80s for highs.

Have a Wonderful Wednesday,
Thomas

Tuesday Evening Forecast

Widely scattered t-storms have popped up across the area. "Widely being the key word here folks as everyone will not get a storm. Warm temperatures will be with us Tuesday Evening with temps in the 80s and winds out of the south 5-15mph.

Tuesday Forecast

It’s going to be a hot one on Tuesday with everyone making it to the 90 degree mark. Winds will be out of the south/southwest 5 to 10mph. There is a slight chance of t-storms northwest of North Platte after 4 or 5pm as t-storms develop off the black hills of South Dakota and drift southeastward.

Wednesday and Thursday will be hot ones with highs in the low to mid 90s. There is a slight chance of t-storms both days.

Friday an area of low pressure will develop across Wyoming. Out ahead of it will be a hot one as temperatures once again reach 90.

Saturday is looking like a wet one as of right now as a boundary stalls over the area. Of course ill be fixing the forecast as we get closer, but also it looks like temperatures will trend downward. As highs on Saturday, Sunday and Next Monday will be in the 80s.

Thomas

Overnight Forecast Monday

Slight chance of t-storms from North Platte and Southwest. Lows by Tuesday AM will be around 60 with a wind out of the south/southwest 5-10mph.

Saturday Forecast

Another hot day is on tap for areas southeast of a line from about Dunning to North Platte. Southeast of this line with winds out of the south i am looking for highs in the 90s. Kearney eastward will have temps in the 100-105 degree range. Factor in the heat index it's going to feel near 110 in Eastern Nebraska. So please use caution if you have any outdoor plans in Eastern Nebraska. And I know, fan day is schudule to go at 9:30 to 11am at Memorial Studium in Lincoln for the football team. I still think that early we may have temps pushing into the mid to upper 80s with heat indexs well into the 90s. So drink plenty of fluids if you plan on being at that event Saturday AM.

There is about a 20% chance of storms across the area through out the day Saturday. There is a chance that some of these storms maybe severe with large hail and damaging winds the main threats.

Cooler air will start pouring into the area. First up north and then slowly moving south, infact I think Saturday night might be a cool night for sleeping with lows in the upper 50s and lower 60s.

Sunday and into next week, will start the week off cool with high in the 80s and a slight chance of t-storms both Sunday Night and Monday Night. But as we get to Tuesday the 90s should return and we should stay in the low to mid 90s with a chance of night time t-storms. Typical August weather wouldn't you say.

Have a great weekend,
Thomas

Overnight Forecast

Severe T-Storms are possible along and north of HWY 2. Some storms maybe severe with large hail and damaging winds the main threats. Thomas

Severe Weather Update...

I'm with everyone who has had a lack of sleep the last couple of nights. Talk about some awaking booms!

Friday mornings/early afternoon storms have moved into Kansas, I think we catch a slight break for the afternoon, then I am watching storms starting to fire on the front range of WY and CO. These could be an issue espeically west of North Platte as we head into the later afternoon adn early evening.

Stay tuned to News 2 for the latest weather updates.

Nice Summer Day

I can't remember the last time I was on here and not talking about severe weather, but that's the case Tuesday Evening. Temps will be falling into the 70s and 80s Tuesday Evening. Then into the 50s for the overnight.

Our next chance of storms comes late Wednesday and I'll explain on News 2 Tonight.

Have and nice afternoon and evening!
Thomas

Monday, July 13, 2009

Overnight Weather...

The greatest threat for showers and t-storms looks to be east of HWY 83 for the overnight Monday. Some storms maybe capable of producing large hail and damaging winds. An isolated tornado can't be ruled out, but I think the threat of that is starting to die off. Lows for the overnight will be in the 60s with winds turning to the NNW by Tuesday AM.

Tuesday looks nice, one of the nicest days we have had all summer in my thoughts. Highs will be in the 80s with a dry NNW wind at 10-20. Dewpoints will be lower than that have been in the last couple of weeks. Dewpoint measures how humid it is outside, and it doesn't look like they will be that high on Tuesday.

The stickyness returns on Wednesday with a southeast flow, that will also return our chances of showers and t-storms and those chances will remain with us through the weekend.

Temps a little lower than expected Monday afternoon. Only in the lower to middle 80s at this point. Scattered cloud cover playing a little roll in that I believe.

Watching out west on the Front Range and the Eastern Plains of Colorado for storms to get going, in fact severe t-storm watches are up in that region. I'm looking for some storms to move into Nebraska. There is a chance some of those could be severe, especially southwest of North Platte.

Stay tuned to News 2 for the latest weather updates and hope to see you tonight on News 2.

Another Rainy Night

After a Tuesday afternoon of Tornado Warnings across the area. Mainly just looking for a wet night during the overnight on Tuesday. No severe weather is expected, but some heavy rain is possible that may cause some urban, small stream and low lying flooding.

A cool (well for this time of year cold) day is expected for Wednesday with highs only in the upper 50s and lower 60s. On and off showers and t-storms are expected as well.

When is it going to warm up you ask? You're answer might be this late weekend as temps rebound back in into the 80s by Sunday and early next week. The bad news is that the chance of showers of t-storms will contiune into early next week.

Starting Thursday, areas west of Hwy 83 are under a slight risk of severe weather for large hail and damaging winds. Highs on Thursday will be in the upper 70s.

Friday, everyone is under the gun for severe weather. In addition, our tornado threat beings to increase.

Thomas

Rainy Night

Light rain will continue into the Tuesday night across the area with cool conditions. Lows will be in the 40s. Sunday, May 31, 2009

Wet Sunday Night...

Showers & T-Storms will continue through the overnight hours Sunday. Some storms maybe capable of producing hail larger than 1 inch. But I think the big threat will be the heavy rainfall.

Monday the chances of T-Storms return to the area as a stationary front sits over the state of Nebraska. Some storms maybe severe on Monday with large hail, damaging winds and possibly and isolated tornado.

Lows overnight Sunday will be in the upper 50s, highs on Monday will be in the upper 70s and lower 80s. Tuesday we cool down and stay wet.

Thomas

More Rain

Showers and T-Storms will continue into the overnight Monday. No severe storms are expected, but the big story out of all this will be the heavy rainfall out of some of the storms. Flash flooding is possible in some areas. If you see a flooded roadway, turn around and find another route.

Temperatures will be in the 50s for lows Monday night and Highs will be cooler on Tuesday in the 60s with a North/Northwest wind around 20mph.

Thomas

Stormy Memorial Day

Well I hope you're grill has wheels and can be pulled into some sort of outdoor cover because we have a ton of shower and t-storm activity across the area. The main threat from most of these storms will be the heavy rainfall due to the slow movement of the storms. But short lived funnels/tornados are possible with some storms. If a tornado is spotted make sure you move to a place of safety.

Thomas

Friday, May 22, 2009

Overnight Update...

Looks like the severe weather threat for SW NEB is all but done. Most of the severe action happened tonight across West Texas. We are still looking at rain and at times heavy rain through the day time Friday and Saturday. Highs on Friday will be in the 50s and lower 50s for the day time on Saturday. Some snow is going to try to sneak into the area, but I think we stay all rain for this event. Speaking of snow, heavy snow is looking likely in the Denver area. 10-36" of snow is possible in this area. Please use caution if traveling towards Denver as there may be some traffic headachs.

When this is all said and done, up to 4 inches of rain is possible in SW NEB. and possibly around an inch for the rest of the region.

The weather IMPROVES greatly! on Sunday with highs in the 60s Sunday, 70s and possibly pushing 80 by the middle of next week with sunshine.

Heavy Rain Moving In

Thomas

Heavy Rain & Severe Weather On Thursday

A large, powerful, slow moving storm system will be moving through the central plains the next couple of days.

Will start with Thursday... I think this will be our best shot of severe weather. Large hail and damaging winds are possible with some of these storms. There is an isolated chance of a tornado as well. Thursday night showers and t-storms will be likely, there is a chance of severe weather Thursday night. But I believe Thursday night, our threat will be changing from large hail, damaging winds and isolated tornados to heavy rain, espeically in southwest Nebraska where possibly up to 4" of rain is possible through this entire event (Sunday AM).

Friday and Saturday the heavy rain will continue. Saturday rain will be slowly changing over to snow with little or no snowfall accumlations. A Winter Strom Watch is in effect for the Metro Denver area and the Eastern Colorado Plains west of Fort Morgan with snowfall of 1-2 feet of snow possible.

Stay Tuned to News 2 for the latest weather updates.

Rain Ending... Sun Starting

Rain will start to move out and give way to sunshine on Monday afternoon. High temps not looking bad either with highs in the 60s. Tuesday looks to be the warmest day of the week with highs in the low 70s.

Wednesday through next Sunday looks interesting with a slow moving low pressure system will start in Colorado and make its way (slowly being the key word) through the central plains. Wednesday and Thursday there could be a possible shot at some severe weather, then as some cold air gets drawn into the system, some snow may start to mix in or change too all together. Definitely something to watch as we head into the work week.

Happy Easter,

Everything you can think of weather wise will effect us through Tuesday afternoon. Including snow, and severe weather. Iam going to start with the severe weather side of things. Warm & Stormy To Snow & Cold?

Lets just get this out of the way, Friday were fine with highs in the low 70s. It will be a little breezy though with winds out of the south 10 to 20.

Saturday and Sunday were going to have a warm front set up shop across southern Nebraska. This may fire off a few t-storms Saturday and Sunday. It still looks mild though with highs in the 70s for most of us, 60s near the SD broader and 80s near the KS broader.

Then the possible wild weather really gets going on Monday as a low pressure system really gets going in Eastern Colorado. This low will move out into the plains Monday afternoon were a severe weather outbreak may take place across the central plains. Behind this storm system… cold air will start to get drawn in and the rain will change to snow Monday night. Still too early to tell on were the severe weather is going to set up and same goes for the possibly heavy snow. Please stay tuned to Meteorologist Tara Moore Friday and Saturday with this early powerful spring storm system.

Some Active Weather On The Way…

Some Active Weather On The Way…

The weather through Friday should be issue free across the area. There will be an elevated fire danger for the day time on Thursday. So please be careful if you are burning Thursday afternoon during the peak heating of the day. Friday will be warmer and I don’t think the fire danger will be that bad due to some return moisture coming into the area. That’s going to lead the way to a stormy couple of days. Saturday and Sunday we have a chance of T-Storms it will still be mild with highs in the 70s. Monday could be very interesting across the area with our first severe weather outbreak of the 09 year. Monday night cold air roars back in and we may have a snow/blizzard event on our hands.

Highs on Tuesday ( St. Patricks Day) will be in the 70s and 80s, the fire danger will be elevated but not as high as Monday. Wednesday temps will be cooling down… but only into the 50s. Thursday the warm air moves back in, and we are back into the 70s by Friday. There is a chance of t-storms on Friday and then again on Sunday. Chance of t-storms? Now were talking spring!

Cold, Snow, Ice and Wind

Were going to get it in all forms Monday night and Tuesday across Nebraska. First lets address the ice, I think the greatest threat of ice will be roughly from Cozad/Arnold towards Grand Island along with about 1-2” of snow. Speaking of snow I think the greatest snow threat is going to be up north were up to 4” of snow is possible along with near blizzard conditions. Here in North Platte I think tops we see an inch of snow, and very little ice. Winds will be an issue though with gusts out of the north up to 40mph, creating wind chills at or below zero through Wednesday AM for the entire area.

Thomas

Cold Express Punching In

And is here to stay for a couple days, most areas were in the teens and 20s as of 1pm. Winds were also on the strong side with winds at times gusting up to 30mph. Creating wind chills in the single digits and below zero. Snow and freezing rain will get going tonight and linger into Tuesday. Snow amounts generally about 1 to 3 inches, but with some freezing rain into the mix that may cut down on some of the snowfall accumlations. It will be cold though, and I think thats going to be the major impacted over the next couple of days. As daytime highs will only be in the 20s and lows will be at or below zero.

Another Winter Storm To Affect The Plains

The weather will be slowly going down hill across Nebraska as we head through the daytime on Monday. There will be a wide range of highs acorss Nebraska, ranging from the 50s south of I-80 to around 45 in North Platte to the 30s in the sandhills. There is also a chance of snow north and northwest of Hyannis Monday afternoon.

Monday night is when things start to get interesting in the plains especially in Nebraska, South Dakota and North Dakota... First off if you have any travel plans into the Dakotas, travel is most likely not happening starting Monday night. We will have are own travel worries Monday night and Tuesday across Nebraska. As for snowfall, iam not looking for much only about 1-3" through Tuesday. But the winds will be a lot stronger with this system unlike the last system. At times winds maybe gusting up to 40mph. In addition, like the last system, we may have patchy freezing rain to deal with Monday night that may put down a coat of ice on ur car.

Tuesday, if there is any frozen precip it will turn back to all snow. Tuesday is going to be a cold, nasty and snowy day across Nebraska. It will make the 70s and 80s we had last week a distant memory. Low presure will pull up into Minnesota, and an arctic high will build into the Dakotas. Tuesday nights lows look to be around zero in North Platte to about -10 in Valentine. Wind Chills may be around 15 to 25 below Tuesday Night as well.

Ranchers, animals should be moved to shelter by late Monday afternoon, especially the young cavs.

Winter Weather Update...

4pm... Snow has started to move into areas south of HWY 92. Here in North Platte its been snow big flakes. Dry slot though will be moving into the SW apart of the state. Will see how that all pans out. Might effect North Platte.

Winter Weather Update...

A Winter Weather Advisory is ineffect for Lincoln, Logan, Blaine and Brown Counties East to towards the Columbus Area. A Winter Storm warning is in effect for Rock and Boyd counites. All of these winter weather headlines go until Sunday AM. Current forecast thinking is about 2-6 inches of snow from about HWY 61 east. With possibly 5-8" of snow north and east of the Dunning area.

Warm & Windy Thursday

If you liked Wednesday's weather your going to like Thursday's as well. Highs will once agian be in the 70s across the area, but we will have windy conditions. At times winds may gust up to 30mph out of the west/northwest. This combined with the warm conditons will create a high fire danger, espeically south of I-80. Please avoid buring during the peak heating part of the day.

Warm Conditions

70s on Wednesday a good bet, especially west of Lexington and Broken Bow. Winds will be light out of the south. The fire danger will be elevated to high on Wednesday and Thursday in southwest Nebraska. Friday will be mild with a few more clouds, Saturday and the weekend brings some changes with cooler highs and a chance of rain and snow.

Clear & Cold

Clearing skies for a good chunk of us will allow temperatures to fall into the single digits and below zero Thursday Night. Wind chills will be ranging from zero to 10 below. Clouds will be in the increase by sunrise into Friday AM, and by Friday afternoon snow will start to fall. By Friday evening up to 1-3" is possible with mainly and inch in North Platte.

Overnight Thursday Update

Showers and a few embeded t-storms have moved into the state. Temperatures have allready fallen into the lower 30s across some areas of Cherry county, Brown County and Keya Paha counties. A winter weather advisory is in effect for northeast and northern Nebraska thorough lunchtime. Up to 0.05" to a .25 of an inch of ice is possible in these areas. For the rest of us its going to be light rain with maybe some patchy fog. Will start out with scattered light rain and freezing rain across the state on Thursday morning. By Thursday afternoon Iam looking at drier, but windy conditions out of the north will make it feel up to 30 degrees colder than Wednesday. Another round of snow is on tap for Friday Night.

Thomas

It’s A Mess!

Through 12am it shouldn’t be to bad with just increasing clouds and a 20% chance of an Isolated T-Storm. Overnight Wednesday I’m looking for freezing rain to develop across Northern and Northeastern Nebraska and Scattered Showers and T-storms for the rest of the state. Ice accumulations with be a .10 to .25 inch of ice northeast of Ainsworth. 0.05-.10 inch of an ice for parts of Brown, Cherry Counties, and parts of Thomas and Blaine Counties.

Improving Weather starting Thursday afternoon, then more rain and snow for Friday.

Isolated T-Storms

A weak disturbance developed over Nebraska and it touched off a few t-storms across the area. For the most part the forecast still calls for partly cloudy skies, but iam going to introduce a 20% chance of t-storm espeically south of I-80 and south and east of Lexington. Lows will be in the low to mid 30s with a west wind at 5-10. For the most part the ice/snow/sleet and rain event looks on track for Wendesday night.

Thomas

One More Warm Day!

Will hang on to the warmth for one more day, then we return to winter on Wednesday night and Thursday AM. Right now the heaviest winter precipitation looks to be in Eastern Cherry, Brown, and Blaine Counties and towards Northeast Nebraska. As of right now I am not thinking this is going a major winter weather event for the North Platte Area. Only an inch at most with the snow and .01 of ice.

A Couple Of Warm Days!

Get out and enjoy Tuesday and Wednesday. Dry and warm temperatures will be across the area with highs making it into the 60s with out any issues. Wednesday night and Thursday could bring some issues into the area. As we will have a chance at some freezing and snow, especially across northern Nebraska.

A Preview Of Spring…

Minus the severe weather outbreaks. Temperatures on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday will be on the mild side with highs in the 60s by Tuesday and Wednesday. Our next chance of precipitation comes in on Thursday with a rain and snow mix with highs dropping back into the 30s.

Enjoy!

Cold Wednesday Night

Cold conditions Wednesday night with decreasing clouds, lows will be in the teens with winds out of the NW at about 5-10mph. Thursday and Friday look dry with highs in the 40s and lows in the teens and 20s. A set back to winter comes Friday night as a storm system approaches from the north; this will give us a chance of light snow Friday night and early Saturday morning. It will be colder also on Saturday with highs only in the 30s. A nice warm for Sunday and into early next week with sunshine and highs in the 50s.

Snow Wrapping Up In Some Areas

We ended up with 8 inches here at the station north of town. As of lunch time the snow was just down to light snow flurries here at KNOP. I expect that pattern to continue through the afternoon hours. Broken Bow and east the snow will continue, in fact in Custer County an additional 1-2'' is possible this afternoon on top of the 8-10 inches you picked up Friday AM.

Another snow maker is on the way for Saturday. Tara Moore will have more on that tonight.

Right now (6:54cdt) we have about 3-4" on the ground at KNOP. Kidda tough with the trees blocking us. But for most of the KNOP-TV viewing area iam looking at about 5-10" of snow still . A Winter Storm Warning is in effect for most of the KNOP-TV News 2 Viewing area until 6pm.

Winter Storm On The Way…

Snow will begin to move into the area overnight Thursday and into Friday. The heaviest snow will be in the time neighborhood of 6am/7am to about 1-2pm. This is when we could possibly pick up 1 to 2 inches of snow an hour. The snow will also be accompanied by strong winds out of the east/northeast 20-30mph and at times gusting to 40mph. This may create near blizzard conditions at times.

By the time this is all said and done, most of us will see 5-10 inches of snow. With 3-6 inches of snow falling in Northern Nebraska and the Panhandle.

Stay tuned to News 2 through out the day on Friday as will have updates through out the day. I will be here in the morning and Meteorologist Tara Moore will be here Friday Night.

Also keep check back to knopnews2.com where u can find the latest weather reports on the blog, school and event closings, up to date weather warnings and advisories and News 2 trueview radar.

Take care,
Thomas

Major Winter Storm On The Way…

Dry conditions will be with us through at least late Thursday. Lows Wednesday will be in the upper teens and highs Thursday won’t be to bad in the mid 40s with Mostly Sunny skies in the AM and Partly Sunny skies in the afternoon.

Thursday night after midnight is when the weather fun starts… snow will start moving from the southwest and by Friday morning up to 1-3” is possible, especially south of a line from Oshkosh to North Platte and Cozad. Friday Morning into Friday Afternoon is not going to pretty in the area well for the entire state for that matter. Snow heavy at times will blanket the area. Winds will also be an issue as well; at times winds may gust up to 30mph causing blowing and drifting snow.

Snow fall accumulations look like this…. And ill talk about this state wide.

South of a line from Omaha to North Platte iam looking at about 6-10 inches of snow. This includes I-80 from about North Platte to Omaha. A lot of HWY effected there, plan accordingly on Friday.

From about Ogallala to Dunning over to Norfolk I am looking about 4-8 inches of snow and north of there I am looking for about 1-3 inches of snow.
